African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana)
An elephant herd has just arrived at the waterhole and wades right in. Elephants fill their trunks with up to 14 liters, then pour it into their mouths. A large one can drink about 50 gallons in a day (~190 liters), in two separate sessions. Elephants definitely prefer habitat where water access is convenient, but in drought herds can travel far to reach water, moving up to 50 miles (~80 km) per day. Finding water in severe times depends on the wisdom and memory of the herd matriarchs, who are sadly primary targets of poachers for their larger tusks.
