female southern ground hornbill

southern ground-hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri)
Ground hornbills reproduce at an unusually slow rate. Two eggs are typical, but only the dominant chick survives. Immature birds function as helper pairs to the breeding pair and without undergoing this helper role rarely go on to breed successfully! All this makes for a very low breeding success rate. Each ground hornbill group occupies a large territory, 100 sq. km. or more, and defends it from other hornbill groups. They communicate over their large ranges with deep booming calls that can be heard as far away as 3 km.
